What is Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)?
Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) is a type of fertility treatment where the sperm is washed and introduced directly into the uterus, bypassing the cervix, during a woman’s ovulation period. By bypassing the cervix, it allows the patient to overcome cervical issues, increases sperm concentration and reduces the distance needed for the sperm to travel to the egg.
This minimally-invasive procedure is quick and relatively painless, making it a viable option before complex treatments like IVF.
How does Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) work?
Intrauterine Insemination helps increase chances of fertility by bypassing some natural barriers in the reproductive process, such as:
- Distance travelled by sperm — Distance travelled by the sperm to reach the egg is reduced by placing the sperm directly into the uterus.
- Higher concentration of sperm — A higher concentration of healthy sperm will be placed in the uterus, increasing your chances of pregnancy.
What happens during an IUI procedure?
Before the IUI procedure:
Any procedure starts with a fertility screening to assess your fertility health and suitability for the procedure. This also helps with ovulation tracking, as IUI needs to be perfectly timed to your ovulation cycle — this is done through blood tests and ultrasounds.
Sperm collection — Preferably, the male partner provides sperm, generally via ejaculation. In some cases, a surgical sperm retrieval is done to collect the sperm directly from the testes. However in such cases In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) techniques may be preferred.
During the IUI procedure:
You will be required to lie on an examination table, while the doctor utilises a small, flexible catheter into the uterus. The sperm is then injected directly into the uterus. This process takes about 5 to 10 minutes. You may be asked to lie down for 10 - 15 minutes to allow time for the sperm to travel to the egg.
This procedure is minimally-invasive and well-tolerated. There is no downtime, and you may return to your daily activities as usual.
After the IUI procedure:
This period is often known as the “two week wait”, which is the average time taken for fertilisation to occur. A pregnancy test can be done during your follow-up appointment to see if the IUI procedure was successful.
Who is IUI recommended for?
IUI is recommended during instances of:
- Mild male infertility
- Cervical issues
- Endometriosis
- Use of donor sperm
- Semen allergies
- Sexual dysfunction
- Low ovarian reserve
- Unexplained infertility

Frequently Asked Questions
- Is an IUI procedure painful?
An IUI procedure is generally painless and quick. Patients can expect to experience discomfort similar to a pap smear procedure and a bit of spotting afterwards. - How long does an IUI procedure take?
The actual insemination procedure where the sperm is inserted into the uterus only takes about 5 to 10 minutes. You may return to your normal activities right after. - What are the success rates for IUI?
The success rates for IUI largely depend on a variety of factors, such as the woman’s age, underlying conditions and sperm quality. Generally, IUI success rates for women are as follows:
- Women under 35 years old — 10 - 20% per cycle
- Women between 35 and 40 years old — 10%-15% per cycle
- Women above 40 years old — Less than 10% per cycle
- Can I still have sexual intercourse after IUI?
Yes, you may continue sexual activities with your partner after an IUI procedure. Dr Tan Heng Hao will always encourage couple to continue sex in days after the IUI procedure to maximise chances of conception. - Can IUI be performed during a natural cycle?
Yes, in some instances, it can be done during a natural ovulation cycle without the use of fertility medications. However, your doctor will better advise you if this is a viable option. - Can IUI help with blocked fallopian tubes?
No, IUI will not be effective for blocked fallopian tubes, and IVF would be a more ideal option instead. This is because the sperm will still need to travel through the fallopian tubes to meet and fertilise the egg. If the tubes are blocked, sperm cannot reach the egg and fertilisation cannot occur.
