“My oldest IVF livebirth using her own eggs – Through the eyes of an IVF specialist”
There have been tremendous innovations and improvements in IVF technologies over the last few decades. What we will never overcome are the biological effects of aging on our patient’s eggs.
I remember the wave of excitement that greeted my patients when it was announced in 2020 that Singapore had lifted the age limit of 45 years for women undergoing IVF treatments. Although this was a progressive step forward, I had to continually remind them that the change had not fundamentally impacted the detrimental effects of ovarian aging.
In that same year, I met a 46-year-old patient with Ashermann’s syndrome, wanting to conceive despite having gone through multiple IVF failures in the past. She turned out to be my oldest local live birth at 47 yrs old after undergoing an IVF treatment using her own eggs.
This case underscores the importance of combining advancements in IVF technologies with surgical techniques, timed with progressive legislative changes and ultimately dependent on the pure grit of a patient in her pursuit of a child!
